Hydraulic bolt tensioners stretch the stud directly and then take up the nut, so the residual load is far more accurate and far more even across a joint than torque tightening can manage. That is why they are specified for critical flange, wind tower and power generation fastening. Tensioners are interconnectable, so a whole bolt circle can be tensioned in one or two passes.
